Throne Barbershop owners Sang Nguyen and Bobby O’Dell had one mission when they started their business:
“Ensure that every client is treated like a king.”
Throne pays attention to detail and offers top-shelf haircuts, straight razor shaves and a selection of liquor, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks for customers to enjoy during their service. Their shop features custom-built leather chairs, with top of the line products to ensure that the client is getting the best possible service. They have 13 highly-skilled barbers, and are looking to expand that list with their new space. Throne has been featured in Travel + Leisure, Thrillist, and The Pearl where they were names in lists such as “The Coolest Barbershops in America” and “Portland’s 11 Best Old-School Barbershops“.
They are throwing a party to celebrate their new space at 4177 N. Williams (in the Peloton Building) opening on March 24th!
Owner and creator Mike Elias started Ship John with his childhood in mind; he grew up in a small New Jersey town called Dividing Creek and spent his time swimming, canoeing, water skiing and rolling around in mud. He often worked on commercial fishing boats with his father, where they would trot along a small shoal with a lighthouse centered in the middle. Ship John Shoal stuck with him over the years, and it inspired the name of his company.
This company is unique! UW broker Tyler Bruss who helped Ship John find their new home, quotes:
“It is refreshing when a cool, local tenant bucks the trend and decides to go the opposite direction by going into a brick and mortar location.”
Ship John will be open to the public and will also be creating their product on site at 1804 NE MLK on April 1st. They will have a retail component for folks who want to see the product in person or order through the company directly.
Back in 2010, PBJ’s opened their very first foodcart. By 2016, they had four carts scattered throughout town, and a very large fan base. In December of 2016, they closed all four carts and decided to focus on opening their very first brick and mortar! PBJ’s created a fresh menu, introducing new sandwiches and keeping some of their classics. They plan on having a full bar in the future, and are very excited about their open-kitchen restaurant layout right on 13th in the Pearl. In a recent Facebook post, owner Keena Tallman posted:
“I want to say how grateful I am to all our PBJ’s peeps, for your support and amazingness. We have the best people ever that have come to our carts over and over throughout the years. We thank you for standing in the rain, snow, sleet and heat just to eat our sandwiches! We truly love you and cant wait to blow your minds in our new restaurant!”
They expect to be open at 611 NW 13th & Hoyt by Spring of 2018! Check out their new website (and menu) here!
Either/Or turned 5 this month; how are they celebrating? Opening up a brand new location on N Williams! Either/Or serves Heart Coffee as their main roaster, and also serves other rotating micro roasters from around the area. They hand-make their own syrup, chai, sodas, coffee and pastries, and offer espresso/beverage flights and coffee mocktails. This delicious cafe will be a wonderful addition to the N Williams neighborhood, opening at 4003 N Williams in May of 2018!
“Either/Or is my idea of a successful business. It’s a small storefront with a lot of heart, intentionality, and really delicious offerings! The owners started out simple and then gradually added their favorite things, each with precision and love. Each cookie, each coffee, each offering is something they clearly love and offer to all of us.”-Heather, review on Facebook
